Europe 2005 London Pidgeons

It's called Trafalgar Square and it's one of my favorite places in London. At the center of the square is Nelson's Column, which stands about 170 feet high and commemorates Admiral Horatio Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. There are other statues and sculptures in the square and the square has a nice fountain located in it. Surrounding the square is the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, St Martin-in-the-Fields church and the English National Opera. But my favorite sight is the pigeons. It was said that, at their heyday, the flock of pigeons at Trafalgar square number over 30,000. You can imagine the problems with pigeon poop. I know there are less that that today, but there are still more than a few pigeons around the square. Trafalgar Square, along with St. Mark's Square in Venice, Italy are my favorite places to have a little lunch and feed a few pigeons. When in London, I always try to get to Trafalgar Square. According to Wikipedia, "Trafalgar Square ranks as the fourth most popular tourist attraction on earth with more than 15 million annual visitors." Gee, I'd call that a tourist attraction. 10/2005

Europe 2005 London Eye and Big Ben

This is considered the classic photo shot in London - the London Eye with Big Ben in the center. 10/2005

Europe 2005 London Dungeon

This is Ethel's favorite place to visit in London. I'm not sure why. She always seems to have a good time when she goes there. Maybe it's because I always get a little weird at least once while I'm in the place. 10/2005

Europe 2005 London Big Ben

Why go to London if you aren't going to see Big Ben? The clock is a symbol of the city and dates back to 1859. The clock tower itself dates back to the 13th century. Big Ben is thought to be the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world. It can be seen from all over London and makes a great reference point for tourists. 10//2005

If you must know, Afternoon Tea at the Ritz requires a coat and tie for a gentleman (me, presumably), costs $50 to $100 per person depending on the Tea selected, needs to be booked approximately four weeks ahead for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Tea and approximately three to five months ahead for Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, consists of a "choice of several varieties of tea, finely cut sandwiches, freshly baked scones, jam and clotted cream and a range of delicate pastries" and lasts about one hour and forty-five minutes. Now you understand why I say I have an unhealthy curiosity about it. 10/2005

Europe 2005 NYC Broadway

It's Broadway in NYC. It's a street that's been acclaimed and disparaged. Some look at it as a caricature of New York City. Some people say it's a noble representation of the city and others see it as a cesspool. But however a single individual views it, the identity of the street is so much more. It runs for almost 14 miles from one end of Manhattan to the other past City Hall, NYU and Washington Square, Union Square, Madison Square Garden, the Empire State Building, Macy's, Times Square, Duffy Square, Columbus Circle, Central Park, Lincoln Center, Columbia University and The Cloisters. Now, I'd call that a street. 10/2005

Europe 2005 NYC Times Square

I've always been fascinated by this corner in NYC. It has the TKTS booth where a person can get half-price tickets for many Broadway plays. I've taken advantage of the TKRS boot many times when I was in New York. It's also a great place to hang out and watch people who come to New York. It's also a great place to watch the locals. 10/2005

Empire State Building From Tour Bus

Picture of Empire State Building taken from a Big Apple Tour Bus. I like to take tours on tour busses. I think the cost of this tour was $35, making it one of the costliest hop-on, hop-off bus tours in the world. Somewhat appropriate for one of the costliest cities in the world. The best thing is that the ticket is good for a couple of days and the route is long, covering a lot of ground. 10/2005

Europe 2005 World Trade Center Monument

It was the one place I had to go visit in NYC. The events of 911 have taken on such a significance world-wide in so many ways. I have no idea how many visitors come to NYC every year, but I'm sure the number is in the millions. Of that number, I wonder how many forego visiting this site? 10/2005

Supposedly, it’s the largest hostel in the world with over 500 beds. It costs a whopping $25 per night for a bed in a dorm. Not a bad price for a place to stay in NYC. You can get good slices of cheap pizza across the street. It’s close to the subway and on a major bus route. It's a very interesting place to stay. I have good stories about the strangeness that can be found there. 10/2005

Ethel and Me - Wailing Wall

When we were in Israel we visted the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. There's a little history here and much of it is in dispute. To this day, I wonder why people never seem to agree on what actually happened two or three thousand years ago. Hmmmm...

Me at the Dead Sea

When I went to Israel with Ethel we took a tour that went to the Dead Sea.

Me with Elvis in Israel

Elvis has an admirer in Israel. The admirer has a truck stop. This pictue was taken with me and Elvis sometime around 1995 or so.

After a siege of several years, the Romans built a ramp to assault the fortification. Knowing that the Romans would eventually prevail, the Jews committed mass suicide at the last moment rather than surrender. 1995

Me at Acropolis

This is me with a souvenir book that I bought at the Acropolis. Behind me is the city of Athens.

Me at Hotel - Athens

In the 1990's Ethel and I did a little trip to Athens to see all of the cool things that are in Athens. While there, I booked a hotel in the center of Athens that had a really great balconey with a great view of the Acropolis, especially at night. That's the Acropolis in the background.

Weather Related Sites

Weather is something near and dear to the heart of every OTR Trucker. Why? Because they live in it. Unlike locals they don't get to home every night to a nice warm fire and a cup of hot chocolate. Boo Hoo.

Weather Channel is the old standby. I like 3 Day forecast since most of my loads take 3 days or less to run.

Interstate Driving Forecast is a quick look at what the condition of the interestate highways are at the present time. It also has a clickable tab for the next day.

Weather Channel 24 Hour Snow Forecast is something I watch. I don't like snow. Why? Because I'm a whooseyfied southern boy and we don't like snow. You can get snow reports for the Northeast region, the East Central region, the Southeast region, the North Central region, the Mid-Central region, the South Central region, the Northwest region, the West Central region, and the Southwest region.
